Living in Central Texas and the Hill Country means enjoying beautiful scenery, but it also means being ready for wildfires, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, flooding, and other emergencies. A little preparation now can make a stressful situation much easier later.
🧰 Build an Emergency Kit + Document Your Stuff
Keep a grab-and-go kit with water, food, medications, flashlights, chargers, important documents, pet supplies, and basic first-aid items. For your insurance file, create a home inventory with photos or video of your belongings, including serial numbers and receipts for valuable items. This can make documenting a claim much easier.
📱 Keep Your Insurance Contacts Handy
Save your insurance agent and carrier’s claims number in your phone. Keep digital copies of your policy declarations, insurance cards, and home inventory somewhere you can access them even if you have to leave home. And know your deductibles—especially if you have separate wind/hail or other catastrophe deductibles.
🚗 Have an Evacuation + Claim Plan
Know at least two evacuation routes, keep your vehicle fueled, and include pets in your plan. If damage occurs, take photos and video before making repairs, when it’s safe. Make only temporary repairs needed to prevent further damage, save receipts, and contact your insurance company promptly.
Bottom line: Don’t wait for the clouds to roll in. Review your homeowners or renters insurance now so you know what’s covered—and what isn’t—before you need it.
