How to Prevent Fires and Burns in Your Home
Every year, the American Burn Association recognizes the first full week of February as National Burn Awareness Week. Whether caused by hot surfaces, flames or scalding water, burns can have significant and long-lasting effects on a person’s health. National Burn Awareness Week aims to limit these incidents by teaching you and your family how to prevent such injuries and incidents in your home.
This year’s National Burn Awareness Week runs from Feb. 2-8.
Consider the following tips to prevent fires and subsequent burns in your home:
- Set timers. Always use timers and avoid leaving appliances and food unattended while cooking.
- Monitor hot water. Set your water heater to a maximum of 120F to limit the potential for hot water burns.
- Limit cords. Avoid overloading outlets and use surge protectors to limit your risk of electrical fires further.
- Control heat sources. Space heaters can help keep your home warm, but be sure to position them on a level surface at least 3 feet away from any flammable materials, such as furniture and curtains.
- Maintain smoke detectors. Install smoke detectors on all levels of your home and in your kitchen, and check them monthly to ensure they’re in good working order.
